may wish to consider. Not everyone can afford an elaborate wedding or simply for many reasons may decide to plan a wedding to celebrate that union with a small
number of friends and family, maybe to use the "savings" for a deposit on a home or a wonderful overseas honeymoon, for whatever reason here are some ideas you
may wish to consider.
Wedding Attire
Besides having a dressmaker make your wedding frock, shopping around in second-hand clothing stores or ebay can product stunning used gowns for under $100, on ebay there are new gowns from under $200 in a verity of colours, and matching wedding attire for the whole wedding party, also remember with a used gown you can always add or subtract to make it different and personal.
There are many ex wedding shoes that have only been used once (some never) that can be purchased for $80 or less and no one will be any the wiser.
Home wedding and reception:
Besides the obvious savings, it also allows you to have many of the old symbols. (confetti, candles, bells, balloons, etc) that are now
disallowed in many of the traditional venues, because of dye stains etc.
Then there is also the freedom of time, you are not working under the pressure of a slotted time schedule (which is often the case with church or chapel
weddings and Clubs)
You may choose to wed at one home and old the reception at another, as one home may be perfect for the wedding and another has the perfect outdoor setting
for the reception. Or you may choose to wed in a nearby park/ garden/beach setting then hold the reception at a home or club. This is YOUR wedding day and
whatever you choose, can be achieved with a little planning, remember this day is all about happiness for you and your guests, the day, you and your chosen partner
want to share with special friends and family.
Clubs:
There are many clubs (golf, bowling, RSL, boating) that offer a wide array of menus to cater for all size guest lists, some Clubs cater
for both wedding and reception, it pays to enquire.
Halls
A cheaper alternative to consider for the reception, is a hall, again there is a wide selection of halls to enquire about.
Church halls, CWA halls and Sporting club Halls.
Mostly these halls are in a quite setting, have ample parking, and are distant from urban neighborhoods.
You may need to enquire about any council laws or hour/noise restrictions.
Tip
Some church halls are on picturesque church grounds and may even have a wonderful church building close you could use as a backdrop for photos.
Houseboats
For smaller weddings this can be a wonderful experience, there are many picturesque settings near the mooring of houseboats to be wed or you
can simply hold both wedding and reception on the boat itself.
There are hire boat services available but alternatively you could enquire around where they are moored to see if anyone may hire you the boat for your special
day, and they may even skipper it for you and take your guests for a river cruise.
There are paddleboats companies that specialize in wedding and reception for a smaller wedding party (see our business advertisements)
Budget reception ideas
Home receptions can be as traditional or as different as you desire, from paid catering to a pig-on a spit, or do your own NZ style "Hungi" and hire
a beer barrel on tap All extras can be hired, including the marquee, tables and chairs, balloons etc, even a jumping castle entertainment for the kids
(and young at heart)
Tip
Fast food can be considered for children, and the local Bakery can also make wedding cakes (sponge etc) as do Icecream cake vendors or if you wish
to have a Traditional Cake, there are many professional specialists that work from home, which will also save you dollars.
Boat Cruises
There are many different Boat Cruise options to consider.
Night/day Trips
Island Cruises
River cruises
Moored Restaurants
Hire your own
Tip
You may wish to be wed elsewhere and then hold your reception on a river boat cruise (there are many inexpensive cruises that offer a luncheon/dinner with
party bookings), if you explain that this is for your wedding reception I am sure they would be only to pleased to supply the appropriate liquor (for an additional fee)
or allow you to supply your own. (If a boat cruise is what you have chosen then you will need to consider guests that have small children as this choice is not a wise
decision, unless those guests wish to arrange babysitting)
Ideas to ponder
If your wedding party is 30 or less you may wish to simply hire a coach for a day cruise, taking in different places and tourist highlights,
(a Glasshouse Mountains tour for example), getting married on the way at a special scenic waterfall spot and having a delight candle lit dinner at a mountain resort
or romantic cabin restaurant that is on route for you and your guests.
Or you may wish to enquire about a country wedding, again there are many farmstay holiday places that may cater for a wedding/reception (especially if it is
offpeak season. They may ever have, or know of a buggy that can transport your bridal party.
Many of these places cater for children's entertainment with pony rides etc, and may even arrange an afternoon hay ride for all your guests, even supply an alternative
camp-oven dinner as a treat to remember.
You could hire a country band that will supply music for dancing or a sing-a-long by a campfire.
These are ideas to get you thinking outside the box, and make your wedding day a very special occasion and one to remember for many reasons without costing
the world..
